Interview with Annabelle McCormack

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

I would tell myself: 1) an author career is very different from publishing a book. 2) Publishing really is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes hard work, dedication, and years to build a career. 3) For every setback, make one positive step forward. If you get a rejection, send another query. If you get a bad review, find a good review and share it with others on social media. If you have writer’s block, listen to a podcast. Just keep at it with positive forward motion.

What are the most important magazines for writers to subscribe to?

I don’t read a lot of magazines these days for writers, but I always got a lot out of Writer’s Digest. I think they have a lot of solid resources and advice for the writing community.

What do you owe the real people upon whom you base your characters?

Truth is stranger than fiction, right? I think of any inspiration I get from real life as research but as an artist, I love the opportunity to build on the truth. The real people are sort of like the paint for the canvas . . . you start with one color, something very basic, and end up with entirely different colors and rich, complex details.

What is the first book that made you cry?

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson made me cry continuously as a kid (but I begged my mom to read it over and over again hoping for another outcome). But as far as books go, probably The Fellowship of the Ring. Sam diving into that water at the end to go after Frodo remains my favorite fictional moment and I sobbed.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Absolutely energizes me. I get so excited it’s all I can think about.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

A bit of both. Readers want what they want to some extent, but I do think they enjoy their expectations being subverted if it’s done in a good way. I try to do a little of that by straddling other genres or introducing twists or elements of surprise.

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

My mom read to me a lot as a child and made going to the library and reading a priority. Also, my sister and I loved playing make-believe games. I think my love for writing came about by using my imagination constantly as a child.
