Interview with Marie-Hélène Lebeault
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
I’m a Canadian who writes YA Speculative Fiction in English but I live in Quebec, a French-speaking province. My books haven’t been translated into French and many friends and family wanted to support my author career. At the time, I was also obsessed with penguins so I decided to write a picture book and make it available in French, English, Spanish, German, and Italian.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
I’m a mom and a retired teacher. I’ve read my share of picture books. In the last decade, a lot of picture books have been focused on ‘teaching’ something to children. Since books need to appeal to the gatekeepers – teachers, parents, caregivers, and librarians – to reach children, I get it. However, it was my intention to bring back whimsy and fun to picture books. My goal was to promote ‘make believe’ as valid use of children’s time. I think I’ve accomplished that goal! I also wanted to shine a light on the intergenerational aspect of child-rearing. The books are fun, while still providing children with accurate information.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The hardest part was finding an illustrator to translate the pictures in my head! I think Katerina did a fabulous job.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I loved everything about the process. I’m used to working on my own, so the collaboration with an illustrator was a lot of fun.
Where there alternate endings you considered?
All the Fairy Grandmother books end the same way, and I don’t think they could end any other way.
Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?
These are short books, and research was done independently. However, once they were translated, they needed to be reviewed for accuracy and readability and I was surprised at how honored people were to be asked and to have their names mentioned in the books.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
My favorite genre is YA Fantasy and Science Fiction. I also read rom-coms and mysteries.
